I struggled with how many stars to give this book. Here's he thing: I believe the information in Save America's Windows to be very accurate and helpful. Mr. Leeke clearly knows what he is talking about, and even infuses the text, which could otherwise be dry and boring, with a fair amount of humor, which is refreshing. And the detailed diagrams and labels of window parts are very helpful, as you'll hear/read parts misnamed all the time (my personal favorite is the very common misnomer "mullions" when one is referring to "muntins".)Since I build tiny houses out of reclaimed/salvaged materials, I am passionate about saving old, amazing materials, windows included, and I support anyone who furthers this in our throw-away society. And I have no problem paying $45 for a technical manual, as I recognize and appreciate all the time, effort and energy that went into gaining this knowledge and expertise. What does chap me, however, is the fact that at $45 for a soft cover book, there should not be a plethora of typos and incorrect labels and, most appalling, whole sections of text missing. Which there are in this book. Page 17, for example, clearly had the text cut off on the right hand side, as every line in the paragraph is obviously missing a few words. There are too many typos to mention, but one glaring incorrect sibstitution was the word "frieze", which is a correct term for part of the window trim, when the sentence was, "...thaw and frieze (sic)..." Which clearly should have been "freeze."I don't know if Mr. Leeke had an editor or not, but if he did, he should fire them. And even then, if you accumulate your life's work into a book that commands a significantly higher price than most soft cover books, wouldn't you at least read through it to make sure what you're putting out there with your name on it isn't chocked full of mistakes?!When someone is that careless with details in one area, it begs the question whether they've been careful with details in other areas, such as technical and trade details. When I started this review, I'd tagged only 3 stars. I'm changing it to 4, because I really do believe Mr. Leeke's work is efficacious, and I believe you will get, for the most part, accurate info about repairing and restoring wood windows, which I feel is a worthy endeavor. But please, authors at large, next time you want to ding a customer a large sum for a small book, proof-read your work!
You are going to try to maintain the unique look and quality of vintage windows in your project structure. Well laid-out, easy to follow instruction on rehabilitating and modernizing these "eyes" of your home. I am certainly glad to have this book on the shelf as a reference for myself, and as a touchstone which I can call upon in order to help others understand my passion for maintaining the original look and feel of my projects.
This is a great book that fills in the "Working Windows" book's gaps. We recently restored our 1940s windows and it was essential in helping me figure out how to fix a sagging sash rail. Such a great resource -- looking forward to using the book when we move onto our next old house!
Valuable information needed to save our old windows and to save money...rather than wasting it on vinyl windows that will need to be replaced within 20 years or less.
I bought this as a highly recommended book from someone who has restored an old house. Now I know exactly what to do and in which order of priority to preserve the original look of my old home.I particularly appreciated the reference section and advice on how to find local restoration workers in my area.A bonus is the good humour of the author coming through in the reading; I loved the secret ingredient for the window cleaning recipe!
Truly the bible for Wooden window restorers. Nothing left untouched here!
Good information will use to rehab 100+ yr old windows
Great info for those both interested in and the actual repair of historic windows.
