Every once in a while a book comes along that is able to skillfully bridge two typically separate fields. I can’t think of a book that has bridged science and spirituality as beautifully as Living in Flow since Fritjof Capra’s Tao of Physics, which was publish in 1975. What sets this work apart is how carefully Nelson-Isaacs lays out his reasoning and explanations about idea that can so easily be exaggerate, on the one hand, or quickly dismissed, on the other. From the start, he is clear about what his theory of flow encompasses and what it doesn’t. And from there he begins to incorporate the often ignored aspect of subjective experience into his argument. This is necessary because the one of the differences between synchronicity and mere coincidence, as anyone who has experienced both knows, is that true synchronicities feel meaningful. Meaningfulness alone is not sufficient to consider an event a synchronicity, but it is a necessary component. After a thorough discussion of how the probabilistic nature of quantum mechanics plays out in the realm of everyday experience, Nelson-Isaacs goes beyond the theoretical to talk about how we can put these insights into practice in our own lives. This is not just intellectual gymnastics. It is a carefully reasoned manifesto on living in alignment with the universe and why, when we act boldly in the direction of our dreams, events tend to conspire to help us in unexpected and wonderful ways.
I thought I knew it all - from Steven Kotler to Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi or the Flow Genome Project. But this book is written with such ability to help the leaders find deeper and deeper layers of flow. "What makes a life worth living?" Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi has asked us. Noting that money cannot make us happy, he looks to those who find pleasure and lasting satisfaction in activities that bring about a state of "flow." LIVING IN FLOW shows you how to do exactly that.
Ordered from Amazon. A really great read so far! Sky Nelson-Isaacs connects the dots of a complicated universe in an emotionally intelligent way. His ideas are both thought-provoking and empowering. A really good atlas to navigate the course of our lives with intention. #inspired
I was fortunate to get an early copy of this book! I'm no physicist, but I am very interested in the discoveries and theories of quantum physics. Sky Nelson-Isaacs delves into this fascinating realm and writes in clear, easy-to-understand examples and experiences. His book shows us that being aware of opportunities as they present themselves, and then choosing to take them, tends to lead us in the direction we wanted to go–even when that opportunity seemed unconnected to that goal. If you're interested in meaningful coincidences, synchronicity, and taking action to follow the invitation of the moment, you'll find this book fascinating and helpful as an informative reference point for your own experiments in being drawn toward your goals and desires. Highly recommended!
This book touched me in a number of ways. It taught me about the concepts of flow and synchronicity- “...flow is not about gaining control or surrendering control; it is about transcending the sense of worry about control.†It helped me see through the author’s examples how tobe more open to and aware of opportunities to poise ourselves to see flow around us. It explained basics of quantum mechanics, which I will revisit! And if reminded me that it’s paramount to keep a sense of wonder about how the things around us seemingly magically fall into place just when we need them to.
Scientist Sky Nelson-Isaacs takes a stab toward solving the mystery of quantum mechanics with Living in Flow: The Science of Synchronicity and How Your Choices Shape Your World. The theoretical scientist sees evidence that the quantum world “scales up†to everyday life, which allows for the phenomenon synchronicity. He believes synchronicity is the natural result of the Relational quantum mechanics (RQM) interpretation at work, which forms a framework of probabilities that respond to our actions as a kind of feedback mechanism. RQM, in great summary, is observer-based, meaning in its view “quantum states†ARE the relations between observers and systems. The first part of the book is more philosophical, describing how someone can “tap†into this natural, invisible “flow.†Then in part two he dives into the science he believes supports synchronicity. As more of a science guy, I was most interested in hearing how reality could interact with observers, tilting the odds for or against us, based on our actions (or lack thereof). I’ve noticed when I concentrate hard on issues, putting more energy toward them, helpful answers tend to “magically†cross my path. Coincidence? Or Is the universe truly interactive, even at its most fundamental level?Perhaps the answers we seek about the mysteries of existence can’t be answered unless we’re brave enough to ask whether the weird scientific findings of the past 100 years (which includes Einstein’s relativity) represent tools we can use to change our lives. Sky Nelson-Isaacs investigates that possibility from a scientific footing, giving us food for thought and a solid foundation to ponder the possible next steps toward understanding this reality we share…and suspect is hiding secrets ready to be discovered.
How wonderful it is to learn more about how scientific principles work in our everyday lives. So much is available about how science works in the physical world. It’s refreshing, in addition, to have information about how our experience of the world is affected by the choices we make. We have immense power to change our experience of Life by using the principles in this book. I enjoyed it thoroughly!
