This book is quite overpriced for very outdated information. It is A 2011 copyrighted edition but so much information is pre-2010. In many chapters, the author talks about new technology or legislation possibly coming for 2010 but this edition is supposed to be 2011. What happened to the update? Also, there are missing diagrams, pictures, and charts. The text points to to a certain Figure, but the figure is missing or wrong. I lost count of how many grammatical errors I found and highlighted in this book. There is NO information on the Volvo i-shift transmission. And again, why is there NO ANSWER KEY for the questions? Although the book is loaded with information, it needs a real update. I must say, however, that I have been using this book and "Medium/Heavy Duty Truck Technician Certification, Test Preparation Manual," by Don Knowles (read my review for that book), and I have passed 4 ASE certification (Fall 2011) tests on the first attempt.

I use this book at school and it has helped a lot. It has many diagrams and pictures to show you how things work and the internals. It also demonstrates on how to do certain procedures.
Detailed and a lot useful information.
The book has a lot of information but it is not as clear as I had hoped. The author needs to remember that most people in this field think and process information better by doing than by reading. There was a lot of unnecessary theory on electricity to read before just getting into the nuts and bolts of trouble shooting. I also felt that the end of chapter quizzes had to many trick answers or were just to hard to find in the text without a lot of unnecessary rereading. I have read many college text books over the course of 6 years and found that this was just not as to the point as it could have been. Better illustrations and easier to understand text would have made better sense in this line of study and work. Mechanics are very smart people but tend to learn differently than most people. We are puzzle builders and the best way to build a puzzle is to do it, not to read how to do it.
This text is being used by my son's Diesel Mechanic program, its a really comprehensive book on diesel. He likes it a lot and says he will keep it for future reference after the degree program is over.
I got this for my college class. It's got a lot of good info, but some of it can be hard to teach yourself from depending on what questions your instructor writes.
The book, delivered in perfect shape and the price was $100.00 less than my schools book store! I like supporting my school? but a boys got to save a buck or two somewhere. I do it by shopping Amazon.com.
